Community Gardens and Downtown Greening Bring Vibrant Color, Wildlife Habitat to Western Pennsylvania
Visiting downtown Pittsburgh for a summer festival, concert or Pirates game? As you stroll or roll along the city streets, look for colorful blooms filling hundreds of sidewalk planters and 435 flower baskets hanging along streets and from bridges.

Children are naturally curious about nature and learn through play. As part of our school grounds greening work, we’ve planted thousands of trees and perennials and added outdoor classrooms, natural play spaces, rain gardens and more as partners at local schools.

As you drive, walk or bike throughout Allegheny County and communities across the region, look for our 130 community flower gardens and rain gardens that provide color, wildlife habitat, food for pollinators and stormwater management. Thanks to the many volunteers, businesses and organizations that sponsor or help plant and care for the gardens.

Volunteer to make a street corner or hillside bloom and make our region a more vibrant place to live. Or, your family or business can sponsor a garden! Please contact Lynn McGuire-Olzak at lmcguire-olzak@paconserve.org or 412-586-2324.

In the early 1900s the Clarion River was so polluted that the bottom could not be inspected. WPC and many organizations and agencies have protected and improved the watershed. WPC has protected nearly 13,000 acres on the Clarion, including some that became part of state parks and national forests, providing habitat for bald eagles and timber rattlesnakes. We’ve funded canoe access sites on the river, which supports hellbenders, mussels, fish and other wildlife.
