Nature Near You Needs You! Here's What You've Helped Us Accomplish So Far in 2026

From planting trees and conserving land to introducing students to nature and architecture, the Conservancy’s work in 2026 has touched communities across our region and helped wildlife thrive – all possible thanks to the passion and generosity of WPC supporters.

Here is a small sample of projects you’ve helped us advance or achieve so far in 2026!

  • Our watershed conservation team has restored nearly 40 miles of stream and volunteers have helped us plant 39 acres of native riparian trees along streams to improve water quality.

  • Together we celebrated 10 years of pinking Pittsburgh through the Pittsburgh Redbud Project! Volunteers and partners have helped us plant more than 3,770 native eastern redbud trees and other native trees along, and in view of, the city’s riverfronts, with funding from Colcom Foundation.

  • Volunteers and community partners have helped us plant 1,225 large landscape trees and 1,630 containerized restoration trees across Western Pennsylvania communities to increase tree canopy, provide wildlife habitat, manage stormwater runoff and provide shade. We have more tree planting events in November!

  • With volunteers and community groups, we planted 1,750 native perennials and shrubs in 12 more of our 125 community flower gardens, to support pollinators and provide year-round, seasonal interest.

  • We’ve conserved 812 acres of forested land so far in 2026. We’re protecting more before the year ends!

  • Land stewardship volunteers have given 560 hours so far. At four preserves, they helped to improve or construct parking areas. At eight preserves, they helped control invasive plants and plant trees to advance forest restoration.

  • Culminating a multiyear project, our heritage program staff and partners placed native aquatic species – 10,000 freshwater mussels and 10,000 American eels – into the West Branch Susquehanna River to bring back populations previously eliminated because of dams and once-poor water quality.

  • So far this year, 2,030 students from across the U.S. and Thailand have participated in Virtual Field Trips at Fallingwater.

  • Fallingwater is celebrating 90 years as a timeless symbol of art in harmony with nature. Early in 2026, we completed World Heritage Preserved, a multiyear effort to repair and preserve essential components of Fallingwater’s stone, concrete, roofs and steel systems.

Thank you! Your support makes a real difference for conservation and for future generations. Please make a one-time or monthly donation, or renew your membership today! Nature near you needs you! Give to protect Western Pennsylvania's wild places and green spaces.

Hike It Your Way!

“Hiking” doesn’t have to mean embarking on a rigorous trek up steep hillsides and through cold streams. Make your time outdoors what you want it to be!

Explore a short, flat trail and listen for birds; take a sunrise “coffee” hike with friends and find a log where you can rest in the morning mist; search for fungi, animal tracks or a heart-shaped rock during a family outing.

WPC’s 47 preserves offer trails and off-trail options for hikers of all levels. Review our Visitor Guidelines and explore nature on Take a Hike Day (November 17) or any day!
