Are you looking for an amazing spring or summer getaway? Visit Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural keywork located in Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands, about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh. Fallingwater is stunning in every season, but it is especially splendid when the landscape comes alive with a backdrop of vibrant flowering native foliage, towering trees and the flowing waters of the Bear Run stream.
As you walk the beautiful forested grounds and explore the house from both interior spaces and outdoor cantilevered terraces, examine Fallingwater’s harmonious relationship with the dramatic landscape that inspired its design. It’s why Fallingwater is often referred to as “art in harmony with nature.”
Built in 1936 for the Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh, owners of Kaufmann’s Department Store, Fallingwater best exemplifies Wright’s philosophy of organic architecture, where the house’s materials, colors and design motifs are all derived from the natural features of the woodland site. With its unique cantilevered terraces, the house appears to float above the waterfall over which it is built. Constructed by local craftspeople, the house is comprised of native sandstone quarried from the property, as well as reinforced concrete, steel and large expanses of glass.
In 1963, Edgar Kaufmann jr. donated and entrusted Fallingwater to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. Today, Fallingwater is open to the public as a museum and surrounded by the more than 5,100-acre Bear Run Nature Reserve. Named to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019, Fallingwater is the only major Wright work to come into the public domain with its original landscape, furnishings and artwork intact.
Tour options include Guided Architectural Tours, Guided and Self-guided Grounds Tours, In-depth and Focus tours, Family Field Trips and more. Enjoy lunch at the Fallingwater Café, prepared in house from locally sourced produce and meats, and shop for a special gift at the Fallingwater Museum Store.
Through the Fallingwater Institute, artists, teachers, designers, scholars and others can participate in immersive and innovative programs that explore the intersection of art, nature and design. Programs include insight/onsite, workshops, residencies and more.
