More Forestland on Headwater Streams Protected in Ligonier Valley
Forested frontage along two streams within the Fourmile Run and the larger Loyalhanna Creek watersheds will remain forever intact thanks to our permanent protection of a 289-acre property in Cook Township, Westmoreland County.

The private land is protected through a conservation easement, which will protect the forest and wildlife habitat along the streams and the beautiful views in the area by limiting development. Portions of the property fall within and are adjacent to the Campbelle Run Natural Heritage Area, which hosts important native habitats that support species of special concern.

The project is a continuation of efforts by the Conservancy to protect the scenic character of the Ligonier Valley landscape while protecting priority riparian lands, streams and wildlife habitat corridors.

Enjoy Wildflowers on Our Preserves
Spring is in full swing and some wildflowers such as violets and golden ragwort are blooming. Some popular WPC-owned preserves for finding native spring species are Wolf Creek Narrows Natural Area, Toms Run Nature Reserve and Bear Run Nature Reserve. Look for spring wildflowers during your May outdoor adventures and share your photos on social media with #waterlandlife.

Purchase Native Plants May 14
Purchase native trees, shrubs and flowers at the annual Native Plant Sale in Ohiopyle State Park on May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., coordinated by the Southern Laurel Highlands Plant and Pest Management Partnership, of which WPC is a partner. This is the plant sale typically offered at WPC Members' Day.

Future Farmers of America students at Fayette County Career and Technical Institute helped to care for the plants.

Keep Migrating Birds Safe
Up to 1 billion birds die after hitting windows in the U.S. each year, and almost 50 percent of those hit home windows, according to the American Bird Conservancy. World Migratory Bird Day is May 9 and it's a great time to learn how to keep birds from hitting your windows. And we have several great preserves perfect for birdwatching during migrations and all year long.
