Forestland Permanently Protected in Westmoreland County

Westmoreland County, known for its forested high ridges and river valleys, now has more protected land! The Conservancy recently protected 492 forested acres in Ligonier Township along Chestnut Ridge. The property and other large tracts of forestland that surround it together make up 4,500 acres of contiguous land that are permanently protected from development and fragmentation.

Acquired through a conservation easement, the property contains more than two miles of frontage along Bergstrom Hollow, North Fork and Dark Hollow Run, all PA Department of Environmental Protection-designated High Quality and Coldwater streams within the Trout Run watershed.

Important for mitigating the effects of climate change, the property protects habitat for common and rare plant and animal species.

To date, the Conservancy has permanently protected more than 30,000 acres in the Ligonier Valley, of which more than 12,000 are through conservation easements.

Mountain laurel, our state flower, has an interesting pollination technique.

Anthers, which hold the pollen, are on stems tucked into pockets and are under pressure in the closed bud. When the flower fully opens, bees come to pollinate, tripping the anthers like a spring. The anther springs forward and shakes pollen onto the bee. Try springing a filament with a twig and see pollen fly through the air!

Read how to tell the difference between mountain laurel and rhododendron.
