Seeing fairy shrimp (Order Anostaca) in early spring vernal pools means two things: The water is healthy, and no fish live there because the pools are ephemeral, or temporary.
These amazing crustaceans consume algae, bacteria and bits of organic waste, thereby “cleaning” vernal pools, and then become critical food for salamanders and some insects. Their presence indicates a healthy, fish-free ephemeral ecosystem! Learn more about fairy shrimp! |
