It’s Redbud Season: You’ll Soon Be Seeing Pink!

April in Western Pennsylvania brings spring showers, wildflowers, Pirates games…and beautiful Eastern redbud trees in bloom! Stroll or bike along Pittsburgh’s riverfronts or downtown during mid- to late-April and enjoy eye-popping splashes of pink blossoms, courtesy of our Pittsburgh Redbud Project. Follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram to watch the blooms’ progress and share your own photos using #PghRedbudProject.

Redbuds are just some of the native trees that we plant in urban and rural areas, with the help of volunteers and partners, to manage stormwater, provide shade for people and food and habitat for wildlife. Volunteer with us throughout April to plant trees such as white oak, tulip tree and more on urban streets and in parks, or to plant native trees such as dogwood and swamp white oak along streams in rural areas to improve water quality.

During April, we recognize Earth Day, Arbor Day and Volunteer Appreciation Month. You—our members and volunteers—are a crucial part of our year-round work to green communities and conserve our region’s wildlife, water, plants and forests! Interested in helping?

  • Invite a friend to plant trees.

  • Plant or steward a community flower garden.

  • Care for preserves by maintaining trails or pulling invasive plants.

  • Use your gardening or speaking skills to volunteer at Fallingwater.

Eastern redbuds put on a lovely spring show, especially around Earth Day. Among the first native tree species to bloom each spring, their pink, white or purple buds provide an early food source for pollinators. Some wildlife feed on redbud seeds. Redbud and other trees planted in Pittsburgh along the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers through the Pittsburgh Redbud Project help capture excess stormwater. Watch a recorded webinar about the Pittsburgh Redbud Project, which was launched in 2016 thanks to funding from Colcom Foundation.
