We are a member-based nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring the region’s waters, forests, natural areas and wildlife, planting community trees, gardens and greenspaces, and caring for Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater.

Enjoy Flourishing Gardens, Trees and Downtown Greening in July

Thanks to plenty of spring rain and summer sun, our 130 community gardens are popping with color. We hope they brighten your commute, daily walk or neighborhood corner!

We’re also enhancing visual interest and ecological benefits and providing food for pollinators by installing native perennial beds, including coneflower, black-eyed Susan, salvia and other native flowers, at 25 more of our community gardens. Native plants in our raingardens and bioswales are mitigating stormwater runoff and helping to prevent flooding.

Pittsburgh’s "sister bridges" – Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol and Rachel Carson – are finally all open to traffic. Of our 400 hanging flower baskets, funded by Laurel Foundation, 192 of them adorn these bridges! Are you visiting downtown Pittsburgh for a sporting event, concert or show? Enjoy the colorful blooms hanging in  baskets and filling 500 street planters, funded by Colcom Foundation.

The 40,000 trees, including native eastern redbud, hophornbeam and oak, that we’ve planted in 73 Pittsburgh neighborhoods and 57 municipalities since 2008, are providing leafy shade for humans and shelter for birds and small animals. They’re also soaking up excess stormwater.

Thank you to the nearly 4,000 volunteers who helped to plant our gardens and trees this spring! We still need garden stewards for several gardens. Or your business, organization or family can sponsor a garden

At nearly 80 public schools and early childhood centers in our region, students can learn while enjoying the benefits of nature, thanks to our School Grounds Greening program. We’ve replaced asphalt with greenspaces so teachers can take students outdoors to study native plants, observe birds and insects, and explore the natural features around them. To learn more, register for a free webinar, "School Grounds Greening: Helping Children Learn in and From Nature" on July 31, at noon, ET.

This stunning view of Lake Erie is taken from Erie Bluffs, an undeveloped portion of the Lake Erie coast. We helped to establish Erie Bluffs State Park and protect Roderick Wildlife Reserve; the landscape harbors a variety of wildlife and several rare plants, and needs special care, too.

We’ve also led ecological restoration and efforts to control invasive species on the land and in the lake. Register for a free screening and panel discussion of our documentary, “Seeing the Unseen: Aquatic Invasives & What’s at Stake,” on Aug. 3 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie.
